Re: Faith Community Nurse Program
As many of you may know Shenandoah Valley Lutheran Ministries has received a grant from
National Lutheran Communities & Services in the amount of $22,000.00 to fund a Faith
Community Nurse in Shenandoah County. This will be a part time position, twenty hours per
week, serving no more than five congregations during the first year.
SVLM in conjunction with Shenandoah County Health Ministry Coalition, has hired a nurse,
Jean Coffman of Shenandoah County to fill this position beginning May 1 of this year. Jean
holds a current VA licensure as a registered nurse and has many years of nursing experience. She
has been accepted in the 2-part course, Foundations of Faith Community Nursing, at Shenandoah
University offered in March/April.
SVLM is currently selecting churches to participate in the FCN program. We are seeking
congregations who would be willing to appoint or elect a congregation member to serve on our
Board of Directors and attend our monthly meetings. This person would have both voice and
vote on this board. SVLM would like to feedback from all of our Board Members as to how the
program is being received in the selected churches and community. We will evaluate this
program throughout the year and decide if there is enough support within Shenandoah County to
grow this program to include more churches in the county and hire additional nurses.
Attached you will find a brochure from SVLM that will give you a brief description of the Faith
Community Nurse’s program and how it will work within the Central Valley Conference and
Shenandoah County. Members of SVLM’s Board of Directors would love to come and speak
with your councils and congregations about this program and SVLM’s current activities and
future goals.
If your congregation would like to be considered as one of the congregations participating FCN
program please respond to this email no later than March 16. Please include your contact
information and contact information for your pastor and/or council president.
